Receiving +voice status means a regular user has been assigned a CHANserv user mode attribute by a channel operator. Bluntly stated, It means you are not a bonehead! CONGRATS!. A new channel user earns +voice status by interacting in the channel with all other users in a polite and respectful manner. Being awarded a +voice is a sign of an OPs respect for a regular user. It is a method of showing the OPs appreciation for regular channel users that consistantly exhibit NON problematic behavior.
Users should never ask for +VOICE or @OP status-- PERIOD. That is a very common policy in many IRC channels and it is widely accepted that YOU JUST DON'T DO IT. There is even an IRC term for it... it is called "OP Begging" and it usually gets you kicked or banned-- NOT +voiced or @OP'ed. If a user consistently asks for +voice [or begs for OP status] they are violating channel policy and should be kicked or banned.
Having been assigned +voice a user should never become egotistical. It’s not an ego thing. It is a respect thing. Additionally, the +voice attribute can be autovoiced with scripts. This practice is up to the individual OP. Just because one OP awards the attribute does not mean all OP's will. DO NOT ASK the other OPs to be assigned the attribute-- because some other different OP gave you a +voice.
Simply stated, if you earn it... you will have a + by your nick in #©hat. If this is a consistently awarded user mode, that is usually a barometer that +users are ready to advance their channel user status to AOP and perhaps SOP. That doesn't happen automagically solely because a user is +voiced. There is a channel wide vote of all OPs... and the Founder reserves the right to have final say in OP approval. Any OP can recommend new candidates to the Founder at any time.
Any OP CAN remove ANY +voice mode setting from ANY regular user at ANY time-- regardless of who set the +voice mode.
Being an AOP/SOP is something you should respect. It’s not a power trip. A channel Founder assigning OPs represents a high degree of confidence, respect and trust between tenured IRC users. You are entrusted with the responsibility to make the channel be functional but still under control. The use of scripts for channel maintenance and user protection is welcomed and in most cases encouraged. This includes scripts that kick/ban for Advertising, Inviting, Spamming, Op Begging, Idle Kicks, Swearing and Channel Flooding. It is the OPs responsibilty to politely enforce the channel policies.
A FOUNDER is usually an experienced IRC user that registers and maintains a channel on DALnet or other chat servers. A FOUNDER must have a registered nick and must not let the nick expire. A FOUNDER has many choices of how the channel will be run, either restricing access or maintaining a topic, as well as having ultimate control over many other user mode attribues that can be assigned to users of all levels. Only a FOUNDER can technically award SOP status by utilizing CHANserv.
To become a SOP you should have a fluent knowledge of services.
New SOP's can be voted in - 75% majority of the other AOP/SOP's - for a new applicant to earn SOPs status.
The founder reserves the right to assign SOP at any time.
The founder alone reserves the right to approve / disapprove all nominated SOPs.
You must be willing to remove anyone, including OPs, if they are not following the channel guide or is becoming belligerent towards the OPs or other channel participants.
All AKICKS are not final until approved by the Channel Founder.
You must be willing to add a user to the AKICK list if that user is displaying obscene or consistent problematic behavior. (i.e. consistent cursing, use of sexual overtones, deliberate name calling, lying to an Op, proven harassment of a user, and the provocation of deliberate arguments.)
New Ops will have a 30 day probation period.
Must have a registered nick.
All Ops Must have kill set on.
Should have a working knowledge of CHANserv.
The user must have been in a +v Status for a minimum of 2 weeks.
A user can be voted in with at least a 75% majority of the other OPs approving that user to the Status of AOPs.
Being courteous, friendly, and respectful to all users.
Not following the guidelines can be reasons of AOP removal by an SOP. If an SOP feels
strongly enough that you need to be removed immediately from the channel due
to the breach of any of the above guidelines, then that SOP should do so; however, the
SOP
must be prepared to give proof and notification of this IMMEDIATELY to the
founder for justification. The SOP must also consult in PRIVATE, with ANY AND ALL OTHER
SOPS in the channel at that time before this takes place.
Failure to have a working knowledge of CHANserv.
It is not mandatory to use a script, but if you do it must not run amuck in the channel.
Failure to perform duties while being an operator.
Deliberate
misrepresentation.
Removing
AKICKS or Bans that have not expired or that have not been set by them.
Noticeable
and deliberate disrespect to the users and OPs of the channel.
Long
Term Absence. If you are not online at least three times a week, then you do
not deserve channel OPs whatsoever.
The
desire to bring a personal argument out into the channel and not where it
belongs in private.
Consorting
to remove a user from the channel by either deceit or misrepresentation.
Not
following channel guidelines.
Interfering
with an argument between OPs if you are asked to mind your own business.
If
you have an argument with someone, do not try to have an attitude of
superiority over that user. First thing you should do is to ask them to leave the
channel. If that does not work, ban and kick them. If they persist, then put
the individual on ignore.
If a
user is on the AKICK list, it is the OPs duty to enforce the AKICK. If
services are down, and as an op, you refuse to remove that user from the
channel, then that means you do not deserve to be an AOP or SOP. If the user
is evading AKICKS deliberately and repeatedly then that individual is to be
report to an IRCop for Ban Evasion. Failure to follow this guideline will
result in a demotion of the position of being an OPs.
The
practice of users giving other users access to their NickServ access list
and nickname passwords is prohibited. If you are found to be doing this, you
will be removed of all OP status until your access list is cleared.
By not following the Op guidelines an
AOP or SOP can be removed or demoted by a channel wide Ops vote. If the
vote is equal to or greater than 75% of the OPs, then that individual will
be removed from the list.
Proof that a AOP / SOP is nuking someone offline in the channel through ANY
type of internet based attacks. This
includes, but not limited to: ANY type of DoS attacks, flooding, or
computer intrusion of any kind. Such actions will lead to a permanent ban from the channel.
Willing
participation in personal attacks on a channel user or operator.
Willing
refusal to assist a user when said user has asked for legitimate assistance.
Allowing
a user access to your IRC client, after you have been
opped in the channel and identified to NickServ.
If your get promoted to OP, and all you do is join, get opped by
ChanServ, and then part soon after, then your OP status will be removed.
Failure
to protect the channel, enforce channel bans or actively allow users to
argue, fight, and disrupt channel activities.
All users should try to acknowledge users that come into the channel. Please be kind to one another. Treat others like you would like to be treated.
Chatting on another IRC Network simultaneously is discouraged, because it produces a
major amount of distraction and idling.
If
you are going to kick/ban a user, the ban has to be lifted by that operator.
If the ban is not lifted after 12 Hours then another op can remove the ban.
If
you are having a conversation in another channel or in a query, try to at
least recognize people that come into the into the channel with in a
reasonable amount of time.
You
are allowed in most cases to remove a user for having an obscene nickname.
This is discouraged if the user is not trying to intimidate people with
their nick and simply trying to have fun. However, people with drug
connotations, racist, or op-insulting nicks are STRONGLY discouraged.
Always
Leave a Topic in the channel, Not a topic that proclaims how bored you where
or a Blank.
If
you do not have anything to say then please do not say such things as “I
am bored.” Try to strike up a conversation with the people in another
channel, or just leave and come back later.
If a
person misspells a word or miss phrases something, try not to correct them.
Allow them to first correct or rephrase themselves. The reason for this is
due to the fact that it is simply offensive and rude of you to do so. People
on IRC speak IRC. It’s not a perfect word, and everyone on the internet
has had typing classes or has made an excellent grade in grammar. In no case
are you to mock them due to an error in their typing. One time is funny.
Many times is just plain annoying.
If any user is in another channel simultainiously [ such as porn or computer exploit channels , or other IRC weirdness of any type that an OP deems unfit--ANY OP HAS THE PEROGATIVE to remove the perverts, lamers, spammers, autogreeters, ad nauseum-- for these activities are completely prohibited to ALL OPs and USERS while in #©hat. If you are a pervert, this is not the channel for you. Spammers go home. Lamers beware.
Having a sexually explicit conversation with an underage user is COMPLETELY AND ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED WITHIN THIS CHANNEL AND WILL BE GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF ANY OPs OR USER AND WILL LEAD TO PERMANENT BAN FROM THE CHANNEL. PERVERTS ARE NOT WELCOME HERE!
PnP v4.22 by pai is an excellent script / addon choice for channel @OPS to utilize as a channel maintenance tool. It is a very useful mIRC "script" that /loads nicely... very simple to understand (use the readme.txt) and the best news of all, PnP is extremely functional and has an intuitive GUI. PnP offers the ability to completely customize many channel protection features and this mIRC Addon can be completely tweaked to fend off loons, pervs, boneheads and spammers. FYI: There are some updates to the script (AFTER it is installed) which offer better protection and can be downloaded here.
