Other questions you may have about what goes on

How to conduct yourself in a civilized manner.

  1. How you should behave. It's very simple really. Just speak to people as you would if you were talking to them face-to-face and you'll stay out of trouble (unless, of course, you have no concept of social etiquette to begin with).

  2. Disciplinary action taken on The Litany Forums also affects your status on #litany and vice versa. If you are banned from the message boards you will also be banned from the channel. The moderators of The Litany Forums are in frequent contact with the OPs of #litany. If you want to state your case, make sure you contact the appropriate person. If you were banned for behavior on The Forum, contact one of the mods there. If you were banned for behavior on the channel, contact an OP.

  3. The channel is not a brothel or pick-up joint. Please treat all members equally as fellow fans regardless of how you might act in a bar when out in the "real world."

  4. Several participants tend to idle while in the channel and there are often periods of inactivity. If you see people in the channel and no one is responding to you, please keep in mind that particpants live in various timezones and many also log in from work. They aren't necessarily ignoring you. Please do not use a lack of response as an excuse to spam the channel with nonsense and do not take it personally when no one responds. Periods of inactivity on IRC are quite common. Wait a bit and it should pick up again. It could also be a server split so you might want to check the DALnet FAQ about that.

  5. Please use a recognizable nickname when signing on to #litany. If you join the channel and we cannot tell who you are right away, you will be questioned. If you do not respond promptly, you will be kicked off the channel. Try to use the same name you use on the Litany Forums or something similar.

  6. Sometimes conversations branch off into several smaller ones. This is fine as long as it only lasts a short while and/or there aren't that many people in the channel. If it goes on for a bit, or if a lot of people are in the channel and talking, you should use the /query feature and talk in private.

What isn't permitted

  1. If it is your first time logging on, please let us know who you are if your nick is not easily recognizable. You don't have to give your life story. Letting us know you are a lurker on Litany is enough. It's okay to idle if you don't feel particularly chatty, but you have to at least let the OPs know who you are when they ask. Failure to do so will get you kicked off the channel.

  2. If you are not using an easily recognizable nickname, please be tactful when choosing one. Offensive nicknames will not be allowed. Free-speech is wonderful, but if you intentionally choose a nick that others will find offensive, it will be difficult, if not impossible to view you as someone who wants to contribute positively to the channel.

  3. Impersonating another member with the intent to cause strife and disharmony.

  4. Personal attacks of any sort (playful jesting doesn't count). If you have a problem with someone either on the board or the channel and can't restrain yourself, take it to private. That's what the /query feature is for. Personal beefs do not belong on the channel for whatever reason. Period.

  5. Spamming the channel with nonsense will not be tolerated under any circumstances and is the one violation that will not go through the usual banning procedures. You will be banned outright. If you continue to try to get on the channel through other means, we will contact DALnet Administration.

  6. Attempts to stalk members of The Forum or channel regardless of intent, be it malicious or "romantic" in nature.

  7. Attempts to stalk members of Skinny Puppy by harassing participants on the channel.

How are bans handled?

  1. If you do something that violates the rules, you will be warned first.

  2. If you continue to do it, you will be banned. While you are still in the channel, that means you can read what's going on in the channel but you cannot respond. If you leave the channel, you will not be able to get back in until the ban is removed. This will last for anywhere from a half hour to a day depending on the offense. Think of it as a time out.

  3. If the ban is removed and you still cannot behave yourself, you will be banned and kicked off the channel immediately. This could be on a temporary basis or permanently depending on your behavior. The ops will discuss and determine the length of time your ban will last. The mods of The Litany Forums will also be notified so that they too can take disciplinary action.

  4. If you try to sign on under different nicks, etc. repeatedly and it isn't because you are have server problems, you will get an automatic permanent ban. No exceptions!

Can I get a permanent ban removed or a ban removed earlier?

  1. Q:  Did you keep trying to sign on under different nicks, etc. to bypass the ban?

Tough luck. Hope you enjoyed your stay. You are no longer welcome. Not only are you in violation of the rules of the channel, but you are also in violation of the rules of DALnet. You will be reported to DALnet administration.

  2. Q:  Do you feel you were treated unfairly, misunderstood, or feel you have learned the error of your ways?

Contact one of the ops, state your case and it will be discussed and determined if the ban should be lifted. You may be invited into a chat to discuss the matter and convince the ops that you know what you did wrong and will not behave that way again.

  3. If you are convinced that you didn't do anything wrong, you can try to convince the ops that they are wrong. Good luck.

If you get back on the channel, you will be watched closely. The banning procedure will begin again, starting with getting a warning and then being banned. If you manage to get yourself banned and kicked off the channel again, you will have a very difficult time convincing the ops that you should ever be allowed back in.
