How do I start to use IRC?

First of all you need an IRC client. A client is an application that allows you to access the IRC networks by connecting to a server on one of those networks. Depending on what type of computer you are using, you have several options. Please familiarize yourself with the client you are using before trying to log into #litany. Since you will most likely do nothing more than chat, there really isn't much to learn. Many of the clients have buttons or menus that automate many commands and make using IRC a lot easier.

Please refer to the following for your options:

  • DALnet has a guide that lists clients available for download here:
    http://www.dal.net/software/index.php3

  • If you use Firefox, you can install the plug-in for Chatzilla, which is a java-based chat application that runs out of Firefox.

  • DALnet has a feature that allows you log-in from their homepage. You can sign in either as a registered user (you would have to register first) or without registering. Just go to the DALnet Homepage and look for the box on the right-hand side that says "Chat now!" Type in a nickname that you like (and hopefully no one else is using) and click on "Go!" It may take a bit of time to load, but be patient and it should work. You will need to be registered to join #litany. Please see the Registration and Join Guide for more information.

How do I find the network that #litany is on?

We are currently on DALnet. You need only find one server on that network that will work for you.

Many IRC clients already have a list of servers to choose from and all you need to do is choose one from a list.

Servers for DALnet can be found at:
http://www.dal.net/servers/index.php3

What do I do once I'm on the network?

All you need to do is type "/join #litany" without the quotation marks and hit "enter". You must have a registered nickname to join.

How do I talk, emote, and use other commands?

To speak, just type what you want to say in the text space provided and hit "enter". That's it.

To emote, or express emotion or perform an action, type, "/me laughs" without the quotation marks and that will insert your nick in front of the action. For example, if I typed that, I would get, "kalyx laughs" after I hit "enter."

Okay, it seems to be working, what else do I need to know?

Once you are set up to use IRC, there are few more things you need to know about DALnet specifically. Please see the DALnet FAQ.
