NOTE: This section assumes you already have an IRC client downloaded and set up or are using DALnet's java application on their homepage.

If you do not, and/or need to familiarize yourself with IRC in general, please see the IRC FAQ.

Registering with DALnet and Joining #litany

You are required to register your nickname with DALnet in order to participate on the channel. The following guide will help you get through the process (hopefully painlessly) as well as tell you how to join the channel and automate certain tasks to make it easier.

How to Register Your Nick with DALnet

NOTE: Wherever the text is in RED, that is where you would enter in your information.

Step 1: Think of a nickname you don't mind getting stuck with. Try to pick something that will help us recognize you without asking.

Step 2: Log on to DALnet using that nick.

Step 3: Type the following:

/nickserv register password email address

Example (do not actually type this as is!) :

/nickserv register thisisapassword this@isanemailaddress.com

"password" is a password you choose yourself to use on DALnet. "email address" is your email address. You should use a real email address or you will not be able to complete the registration process.

Step 4: Wait for DALnet to send you an email to confirm your registration. This is why you must use a real email address. In that email, there will be an authorization code and instructions on how to use it.

Step 5: DALnet will give you message telling you that your registration is complete.

Step 5: From now on, whenever you log on to DALnet, you will need to Identify. See next section for details.

How to Identify to Nickserv

As soon as you're logged into DALnet using your registered nick, Nickserv will warn you that you have 60 seconds to identify using your password before they change your nick to something else.

Enter the following:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered with DALnet. Do NOT type out the word "password" itself.

Hit Enter.

How to Join the Channel

Once you are logged into DALnet and have identified your nick, just type the following and hit Enter:

/join #litany

Really, it's that simple.

You can even join from the DALnet Homepage by following the instructions below:

  1. Go to the DALnet Homepage
  2. Find the box on the right hand side that says "Chat Now!"
  3. Enter in your registered nick where it says, "Nickname."
  4. Click on the button that says, "Go!"
  5. When Nickserv prompts you to give a password, enter the password you chose when you registered as follows:

    /nickserv identify yourpasswordgoeshere

  6. Once your password is accepted, type in the following:

    /join #litany

  7. Hit "enter."

How to Automate Identifying and Joining

NOTE: You cannot use automation when using the DALnet java application on their homepage.

Each client or application is different with regards to how they allow you to automate commands when connecting. This section will deal with a few of the more popular clients for getting on to IRC. It is very important that you spell "nickserv" correctly. Make note that there is no "e" at the end of it.

NOTE: I am aware that several of the clients below offer the option to enter in a password in a text box provided. Since DALnet is rather picky about the sytax used, I have chosen to only present a way I know works for certain. If putting in your password in those text boxes works for you, feel free to use them.

IRC Clients:

mIRC - Windows
xchat - Windows/Mac
Snak - Mac
IRCle - Mac
chatzilla - Firefox Browser Plug-in

mIRC

Step 1: Go to your Tools menu and select "Options..." or click on the icon that has a folder and a hammer on it.

Step 2: Under "Connect" at the top of your Options list, select "Options." Yes, it's a bit redundant but you should be able to see what I mean.

Step 3: Click on the button that says, "Perform.."

Step 4: Make sure the checkbox for "Enable perform on connect" is checked off.

Step 5: Under "Networks:" select DALnet from the dropdown list. You might need to Add it first for it to appear. Do so by clicking on the Add button and selecting DALnet from the list.

You want to make certain you enter this for DALnet ONLY, not All Networks.

Step 6: Once you have DALnet selected under "Network:" type the following:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered. Do not type the word, "password."

Step 7: You might even want to add the following to join #litany automatically too.

After the identify command, hit enter and type the following on the next line:

/join #litany

From now on when you log on to DALnet, you will automatically be identified and (if you chose to do so) automatically join #litany too.

Step 8: When you're done, click on OK and you're set.

xchat

I must confess to not having much experience with this application and am using a version written for Mac. So any corrections would be appreciated.

Step 1: Make sure you're not set up to automatically connect upon start-up so you can enter the commands before connecting. Select Server List under File. Highlight the DALnet network and select Edit.

Step 2: On the bottom, next to Connect Command type:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered. Do not type the word, "password."

Step 3: If you want to be able to join #litany automatically as well, type #litany in the Join Channels text box.

Step 4: Click on Done when you are finished.

From now on when you log on to DALnet, you will automatically be identified and (if you chose to do so) automatically join #litany too.

Snak

Step 1: If the Profile List window is not active, select it from the Window menu or press command + K to activate it.

Step 2: Select the DALnet server you will be using and hit the "Edit..." button.

Step 3: In the text area provided next to "Startup Cmds (optional):" Enter:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered. Do not type the word, "password."

Step 4: You might even want to add the following to join #litany automatically too.

After the identify command, hit enter and type the following on the next line:

/join #litany

From now on when you log on to DALnet, you will automatically be identified and (if you chose to do so) automatically join #litany too.

Step 5: When you're done, click on OK and you're set.

IRCle

Step 1: If the Connections window is not active, activate it by going to the Window menu and selecting it.

Step 2: Highlight the DALnet server you intend to use. If you need to add one, click on the "Server..." button and Select one from there.

Step 3: Once you have the server selected, click on the "Edit..." button and then on the Autoexec tab. Enter the following:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered. Do not type the word, "password."

From now on when you log on to DALnet, you will automatically be identified. IRCle only lets you enter in one command for automation. You will have to join channels manually by typing the following after you're logged-on and identified:

/join #litany

Step 4: When you're done adding the command to Autoexec, click on OK and you're set.

IRCle also lets you create buttons to automate tasks under Preferences. Please see IRCle's documentation for further details.

Step 5: Whatever you do, remember to Save Preferences under the File menu or you'll lose all your settings. IRCle is quirky that way.

chatzilla

Step 1: Launch Chatzilla from Firefox and open the Preferences menu.

Step 2: If A DALnet server isn't listed, enter one by clicking on the Add button and typing one in (like rumble.fl.us.dal.net) next to "Network:" Don't worry about "Target:" Click OK when done.

Step 3: Now from the list on the left side, select the server and click on the tab that says "Lists."

Step 4: Under "Auto-perform," click on the "Add..." button and enter the following:

/nickserv identify password

"password" is the password you chose when you registered. Do not type the word, "password."

Click OK.

Step 5: You might even want to add the following to join #litany automatically too.

Hit "Add.." again and type the following:

/join #litany

Click OK and then when back in the Lists window, click OK again to finish up.

From now on when you log on to DALnet, you will automatically be identified and (if you chose to do so) automatically join #litany too.
